As long as anyone can remember, the coming of the Undertaker has meant the coming of death. Until one day the grim promise fails and tension builds as the God fearing townsfolk of Backwater wait for someone to die.

Guess it's been a while! Had a great internship in London working mostly on the game cinematics for the new FPS game "Brink" and also animated on a bunch of commercial work. Just recently graduated and is now all finished with my bachelor in animation in Denmark where my bachelor movie "The Backwater Gospel" premiered at the cinema! (It can be seen online soon)

I have to wait a bit before I can post the animation and concept art I did at The Mill. So meanwhile I'll just fill up the rest of this post by dumping out the few scribbles I did while I was there..

Last year a friend of mine wanted me to paint a picture for her mothers birthday. The painting had to include the mountain from my hometown in Norway called "Torghatten" Likewise it also were to include seagulls and "Fembøring"(a type of boat) wich is also quite common here in Brønnøsynd (at least on older classical paintings from this area)

For two Saturdays I was lucky enough to get into Glenn Vilppu's weekend classes here in Viborg.

In general, it was quite difficult for me to draw when there was so many things to think about again.

I do however feel I learned a lot from those two days, and things started to become a little bit more easier and automatic towards the very end. To bad it was for such a short time though, he's such a talented draughtsman and teacher.

The guideline: Having pleased man waiting at the bus stop.
After 3 seconds a bird takes a crap on his head. Show the reaction when he discovers the crap, then have him angrily searching the heavens for the source. Use 7 seconds.

Wish I had more seconds to work with for longer pauses or letting something more intresting to happen in the animation.

I don't really know how famous she is internationaly, but I think mostly only norwegian people are familiar with the artist Marit Larsen. (I don't think we're related)
Also a hard one, because there's hardly any distortions on her features

Decided to give a try at the weekly creature design activity at conceptart.org

This week had quite an intresting twist where you had to create it from a given soundfile: Listen to the sound here

This large amphibian produces loud mysterious sounds that can be heard from the swamps with the help of it's heavily build chest and air sacks. It's used for attracting members of the opposite sex, as well as alluring smaller creatures to eat.

Visually, it also attracts smaller creatures with the thin "tentacles" attached on the shoulders with firefly looking lights towards the tip.
They are easy to detect, even when the swamps are densely packed with fog. It also fools smaller creatures by laying down into the water while only keeping the "fireflies" above it. This makes the huge creature appear smaller then it really is.

Haven't updated this blog since last year now, so I guess it's time to get started again.

Here's an animation exercise from last week. The task was to make someone interact with a box. Didn't have much time to work with it, so an extra day with fixing and polishing would have been -kewl.

Here's something from last year. It's a 20 sec Tv ident for Nicelodeon. I had around one and a half week to do the animation, the rest of the work was done by the danish company KMA

Steampunk. myths and legends

Here's my entry for the Steampunk competition at cgtalk.com

Here's the story behind it:

This image tells the steampunk version of the battle between two creatures from Greek mythology. Pegasus, the flying horse with wings. And Chimera, a monster equipped with the head of a lion, goat and a dragon. According to the legends Chimera was defeated by Pegasus, but I wanted this image to show a more dramatic moment where Pegasus who is usually assumed with flying and grace is now pushed down the image with all it's weight, while Chimera is the superior one placed higher above in the middle of the attack.

as a little side story I wanted to include the "sad/fun" situation on the poor steam punk Edderchoppers "spiders". Machines manufactured with a constant "smile" where their main task consists of pulling carried. Smiley faces were made on them to make them appear as friendly and to make people happy, even though the majority complained that they were rather creepy looking instead. Numerous of Edderchoppers are getting destroyed during the battle. They are all terrified and overwhelm by agony. But from the look on their face, they seem to be doing just fine! =)

I think it feels too fast in many places. Not enough room for settles and "thinking time" for the character. I originaly wanted the "tippy toe" walking to be more slow and "carefull" But it was to long to fit inside the 120 frame limit we were given.

On monday we got 1.5 days to do construction animation.
We're starting with a skeleton yawning with some musclegroups attached, later we take a new piece of paper on top cover the whole thing with flesh.
So the overall look of the finished fleshed out human character would look quite strange. But hey, atleast it was constructed from the inside out ^^

I guess it just has to be taken for granted not to end up with any fancy nice looking animation or apealing characterdesign doing this assignment.
We weren't alowed to do cartoony overexaggurated yawn either.

On Monday, we had 2 hours to come up with a psynopsis for our story for the theme "circus", draw storyboard,charactersheet and modelsheet.
(it had to follow the Anticipation - action - reaction rule, and we had make a character with two feet)
On Tuesday we did all the thumbnail drawings and animated the storytelling poses.
And the following 3 days left we had to finish the actual animation. It was really hectic week but I had a really fun time as well^^

the drawings have allready been captured out on the linetesert, but since we havent gotten our username and pasword for the pc's at the computerlab yet I have to post pictures of it from now.
